Cub Scouts Pinewood Derby set for Saturday at church

Cub Scouts from across the Black Beaver District are gearing up to race down the tracks at the annual Pinewood Derby.

Competitors can get a head start by pre-registering their cars for the big race. Participants can pre-register and pick up the rules from the Laura Fields Scout Service Center & Scout Shop, 620 Cache Road.

Same-day registration begins at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday at the race venue: Lawton First United Methodist Church, 2602 NW Ferris.

The day's events include race categories for Lions, Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos. An open category is also available for siblings and adults to compete in.

Entry fee is $5. Each participant will recieve a Pinewood Derby patch. First-, second- and third-place winners in each category will also be recognized.

The Pinewood Derby is a proud Boy Scout tradition. Each Cub gets the opportunity to turn a block of wood into whatever kind of car he can imagine, according to Paul Greene, the derby's master of ceremonies.

"We have a broad range of cars that show up, from simple wedges to very complex-looking tanks," Green said. "One year we had a car that looked like an Indy car."

Greene suspects that this year's derby might see an influx of Star Wars-themed cars due to the recent release of the latest film in the franchise.

"We see a lot of cars that look like other cars that they might see around like Lamborghinis, or cars they would have Hot Wheels of," Greene said. "With the internet, now kids can google images, pictures and plans, and some get rather intricate and they do some pretty cool things."
