City may benefit from sales tax ruling

Lawton and Comanche County have already seen extra revenue from the state's efforts to collect sales taxes for online purchases shipped from outside Oklahoma, and more money could be on the horizon thanks to a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.

The court, in a 5-4 decision released June 21, said that states have the power to collect sales taxes on purchases made online and shipped to locations within their borders. Previously the court required that, to be subject to the sales tax, an online retailer must have a "physical presence" within the state, such as a distribution center or retail operation.
