Velma bond issue OK'd; Jeffco passes liquor by drink
Southwest Oklahoma voters overwhelmingly approved a bond issue for Velma-Alma schools, liquor by the drink in Jefferson County and renewing an electric franchise agreement in Cement.
Velma-Alma school voters approved a $350,000 bond issue by a vote of 199-8. The money will be dedicated to remodeling the schools' dining hall, kitchen, restrooms, walk-in refrigerator and freezer, and adding kitchen equipment.
Jefferson County voters, by a margin of 497-97, approved the sale of liquor, wine and strong beer by the drink. Oklahoma voters changed the state's alcohol laws last November, which will eliminate the sale of 3.2 beer in 2018. Without the approval of liquor by the drink, restaurants and events like the Waurika Rattlesnake Festival would no longer have been able to serve beer.
