Mangum girls excited over rare state tourney run
T-shirt orders, travel schedules and scouting reports filled Sam Hale's mind when he went to work Monday morning.
A hectic week lies ahead, one no other Mangum girls basketball coach has dealt with since 1988.
The unranked Tigers (22-7) play in the Class 2A state tournament Thursday against top-ranked Dale (27-2). It's the school's first team to make the Final 8 in almost 30 years.
"There's a pretty good feeling around here," Hale said.
Mangum became one of two teams to advance out of Area III by limiting its opponents to 32.6 points per game in the playoffs. Hale's group secured its state tournament spot after a 34-26 win over No. 11 Rush Springs on Saturday in Chickasha.
The theme has been defense.
Scoring runs were tough to come by Saturday: Mangum flew out to a 6-0 lead, Rush Springs outscored the Tigers 6-3, then it was halftime. Mangum was up just 9-6.
